Meet Dan and Amy from CrossFit SY1

Over the past month we have been discussing all things CrossFit and following the training sessions at CrossFit SY1 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Today we are chatting to the owners, Dan and Amy, who have kindly offered to share their CrossFit experiences and provide us with top tips on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What inspired you to become a CrossFit trainer and where is your CrossFit box (gym)?

Amy – I started training at CFSY1 three years ago and I have never been fitter or stronger than I am today and I’m still seeing progress. I became a trainer to share this with other people.

Dan – I had been training for years but never saw the results that I’ve got through CrossFit. I wanted to share it with as many people as possible. Seeing people achieve things they didn’t think they could is the best part of the job.

What’s your favourite evening meal after a hard day’s training?

Amy – Salmon and homemade lactose free vegetable lasagna.

Dan – Steak, roasted Mediterranean vegetables and sweet potato.

What three key pieces of advice would you give to someone trying to improve their fitness?

Amy – Nutrition is important, moving more than you do now is a start, find something you enjoy, community environment helps.

Dan – Find something you enjoy doing, be consistent, give it time, there are no short cuts or quick fixes.

How would you encourage someone to try CrossFit for the first time?

Amy – Come along and try or watch a session, get a feel for how the community support works and see the multi abilities among our members, hear their stories. You don’t need to be fit to start.

Dan – There is no ego in a CrossFit box. Everybody is there to improve, help and motivate each other. All workouts are scaleable to any fitness, experience or strength level.

What is your exercise regime and how do you make time for it?

Amy – Five days of CrossFit a week (typically one hour sessions) and two days rest when I do yoga and mobility work. I train in the mornings before work or coaching.

Dan – One hour a day, five times a week, keeping things varied. The majority of CrossFit workouts are short and intense, so you can warm up, practise a skill or build strength and do conditioning within an hour long session.

How do you stay focused on your healthy eating goals?

Amy – I meal prep on Sundays and Wednesdays and that covers the meals for the week. If I crave a treat I save it for one day at the weekend! I think about my goals and how nutrition will help me achieve those goals. Keeping on track with my partner helps, we motivate each other.

Dan – Take time each week to meal prep, set yourself goals and hold yourself accountable to them. Allow yourself a treat at the weekend.

Guys, what’s your…

Favourite snack?

Amy – Ham, apple and almond butter.
Dan – Fruit, usually a banana.

Energising workout tune?

Amy – Anything, I tend to zone out! My partner thankfully has good taste in music so that works for me.
Dan – Queens of the Stone Age – “The way you used to do”.

Favourite type of training?

Amy – Crossfit
